Saturday, April 17, 9-11:30 a.m. — Village Alliance Spring Planting sponsored by Valley National Bank. Volunteer in Downtown Maplewood Village to help plant flowers in  flowerpots.   Scout, school and church groups are welcome.  Flowers and soil provided, so please bring gardening tools and gloves.

Help the Green Team energy conservation group distribute information on the attractive NJ Clean Energy programs which provide financial support for households that take energy conservation measures.  There are excellent programs to provide financial help and advice on ways that almost all Maplewood households can reduce their energy waste.  The Hilton and Lightning Brook neighborhoods will be the focus on this morning. Where are the clean energy dollars

To help plug New Jersey’s budget gap, Governor Christie has announced that he will take $158 million from the Clean Energy Program in 2010, and additional funds in 2011. These Clean Energy Program funds WERE COLLECTED FROM RATEPAYERS  (us) through a monthly fee on utility bills, and had been budgeted by the NJ Board of Public Utilities to support job creation in critical energy conservation, efficiency and renewable energy programs for residents, businesses, industry and local governments across the state. Environment New Jersey is coordinating an April 1st Call In Day (this Thursday) to generate calls in protest of the cuts.
