Duck Dash

Mallard Mania at Memorial Park in Maplewood unfolds as the winner streaks (ok, slowly bobbles) to the finish line.

By the way, the actual aquatic aves were bathing by the bridge in the background unconcerned with the rubber ruckus upstream.

Students protest denial of tenure to two beloved teachers

Many current and former students at South Orange middle school protested the decisions of school officials to deny tenure to two revered teachers, Mr. Steven Cohen and Ms. Kathleen McCort.  As policy dictates, school officials aren’t discussing it publicly.  See the link for more info.

It’s refreshing to see students who feel so positively about their teachers.    I wish I had felt that way in school back in the day.

State of the Village

An interesting upgrade in communication took place last night.  South Orange Village President, Alex Torpey delivered the State of the Village live in an address to the public instead of in an internal town meeting.  It was good to hear where the mayor hopes to take the town.  The mayor touched on IT, property taxes, redevelopment, ‘bureau pathology,’ green issues, budget and other issues.

One new wrinkle is that there will now be ‘single-stream’ recycling.  Glass, aluminum,  paper and newspaper will all be combined in a single toter for pickup starting in July.
