The reservoir in South Mountain Reservation always seemed a bit un-reachable, which was both good and bad.  In an attempt to make it more accessible, yet still a part of the area’s unspoiled nature, the county has opened a brand new paddle boating and picnic pavilion on Cherry Lane between South Orange Avenue and Northfield Avenue in West Orange.  It’s open til 8pm and you can rent a 2-seater for $14 or a 4-seater for $18.

Other developments or existing features within the “South Mountain Recreation Complex” include:

  1. Turtle Back Zoo
  2. miniGOLF Safari
  3. Boathouse Restaurant
  4. Codey Arena
  5. revamped Treetop Adventure Course nearby
  6. dog park
  7. wildflower garden
  8. Hemlock waterfall
  9. acres of picknicking and meadows
  10. hiking trails
  11. scenic views of NYC and NJ
  12. rahway brook
  13. Washington’s rock (historic)
  14. much more…

Much of the credit for the paddleboats goes to Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo.  More details below.
