Art Curators treasure trove in South Orange, NJ

chaplinafp
The homeowners at 128 Prospect Place in South Orange, NJ curate, support and sell a treasure trove of contemporary art thru Art For Progress, a charity they run. –

http://www.artforprogress.org

One of many such artists’ works are for sale and prominently featured at their beautiful Victorian home which is also currently for sale.  The artist, Juan Manuel Pajares created the above image, and has a number of other works which combine a street/graffiti vibe with major cultural icons.  Other works feature such icons as John Lennon, Derek Jeter, Mick Jagger, Steve Jobs, Marlon Brando, Angus Young of ACDC…

Stop by the home for this Sunday’s open house (October 5) if you’re interested in seeing a small sampling of this art or in purchasing their home or drop me a line if you can’t make it Sunday.

Here’s a link to my previous post showing their home –

Here comes Maplewoodstock 2013!  I’m looking forward to chilling in Memorial Park this weekend.  I especially like sunday’s headliner, Joan Osborne’s off-kilter, blues-rock, dirty classic “Right Hand Man.”  The Iguanas and Brother Joscephus headline saturday.

It’s two days (July 13 & 14) of both local bands and bigger acts, lots of great local food, a beer garden, arts exhibits and a kid’s area.  Below is the link for more info.

Arts in Orange update

Jefferson St. Mural

Here is an update to previous posts about the art renaissance in Orange NJ.

There are eight live/work lofts and 4,600 square feet of commercial space being built at the corner of Freeman and South Jefferson Streets. Having artists live there would “change and enhance the energy that has already been growing by leaps and bounds”, said Terry Boddie, a New York University art teacher who also runs the Oualie Art Gallery in a Hands-rehabbed space next door to the construction site.

There is Hat City Kitchen (popular restaurant and live music venue) and now Mazzi Dogz restaurant.  Dan Fenelon, a painter, and his wife, Kadie Dempsey, an arts group administrator lead the transformation of a 1905 firehouse on Forest Street into seven live/work lofts for rent.  According to Dan, there are “Huge spaces, so close to the city, way less expensive, near the Highland train station. It’s a cool scene, with lots of other artists around.”

Reconstruction of  the seven story Berg & Co. hat factory building by Hands Inc. into 66 loft condos with 17 artist studios and 3 arts-business spaces is poised to move forward once economic and real estate market begins to gather steam.
