The Clarus in downtown Maplewood

clarus
Tom and Jennifer Carlin, Maplewood residents and local chef/restaurateurs will open a restaurant and bar at the Clarus in Maplewood, the mixed-use development rising at the site of the former Post Office.  Tom & Jennifer, the husband-and-wife team behind the Gladstone Tavern in Gladstone, signed a lease for a roughly 4,000 square-foot ground floor space on Friday.  The restaurant and bar will open its doors in the summer and will occupy much of the retail space in the new development joining two other signed tenants, Starbucks and BCB Bank.
The developer, Joe Forgione is negotiating with other potential retail tenants for the remaining space. He said there has been a great deal of interest from a variety of businesses, but wanted to ensure that tenants would not compete directly with other local businesses and would “bring vitality to Maplewood Avenue.” Forgione helped secure the liquor license for the venture and it will need to be approved by the Maplewood Township Committee (which acts as the local Alcoholic Beverage Control.)

All apartment residents on the second and third floors will have access to amenities including a state-of-the-art fitness center, yoga and spin studio, package center, resident lounge, billiards, and a beautifully-designed luxe lobby with double-sided fireplace. A digital, fitness-on-demand personal trainer will also be available 24 hours a day in the virtual fitness room. The building also includes a 20-car parking garage “with an electric car charger, personal storage space for residents, secured bike storage, and elevator service.”

RIP Laura Grace Stammers Nichols

My sympathies to the family of Laura.

I returned her empty platters to the Blue Plate last thursday afternoon after Laura catered a broker open house for me with her amazing cornbread and tasty specialties. She told me about her dangerous run-in with a pot-hole on Irvington Ave. and how she was in the news. She seemed a little banged up, but was her usual big-hearted self and after a few minutes of chat I was on my way.

It’s now monday and I haven’t really processed this loss for her family, and for South Orange & Maplewood. She obviously made an indelible mark on many of us here in SOMA.  RIP Laura.

Here comes Maplewoodstock 2013!  I’m looking forward to chilling in Memorial Park this weekend.  I especially like sunday’s headliner, Joan Osborne’s off-kilter, blues-rock, dirty classic “Right Hand Man.”  The Iguanas and Brother Joscephus headline saturday.

It’s two days (July 13 & 14) of both local bands and bigger acts, lots of great local food, a beer garden, arts exhibits and a kid’s area.  Below is the link for more info.

New Restaurant Row on Halsey St. in Newark

Will Halsey St. in Newark become the newest hipster scene?  There are a few signs:

Je’s, a soul food staple

27-mix, an American/Southwestern restaurant

Art Kitchen, a cupcake spot

Kilkenny Alehouse on nearby Central Ave.

Restauranteur Joel Bolden and his NY Giants pals, Michael Strahan and Justin Tuck have opened a new comfort food cafeteria called Elbow Room specializing in several different versions of Mac & Cheese.  Games and internet access there may appeal to the many college students in the area.

Harvest Table, a fresh food-healthy food spot
